European Day of Languages

As an initiative of ACSUR-Murcia and the ADAPT Association of San Pedro there was a celebration of the European Day of Languages in the town hall of San Pedro del Pinatar on Friday 26 September 2008.

The ceremony was presided over by the Mayor of San Pedro, Jose Maria Gardia Ruiz and attended by members of ADAPT, town hall councillors and staff members and students from the town's two secondary schools representing the many nationalities resident in San Pedro del Pinatar.

After opening words about the European Day of Languages from the president of ADAPT, Jane Cronin and Luisa Sirvent of ACSUR-Murcia in both Spanish and English, the Mayor spoke to those present addressing himself especially to the young people attending, about the need for mutual understanding and openness to other cultures.

The Mayor then led those attending in writing the words "talk to me" in as many different languages as possible on the panels set up for this purpose.  Each person was then given a sticker with the words "Talk to me" written in one of the forty different languages.

The nueva linea bus will be free to both young and old.  The Mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar was presented with a new Immaculada Mini-Bus which will run through the town connecting the suburbs and beaches of Lo Pagan & El Mojon.

It will be free to pensioners, retired people and children.  There is also a bus pass for ten journeys for eight euros, otherwise it will cost a euro per journey.

The Mayor also said that the transport was a necessity the town should have because there is an important quantity of older people in this area.

New opportunities are always around us, the challenge is to take them up when we find them!  On Saturday 7 June the ADAPT association in San Pedro del Pinatar heard a presentation by Maria Jose Arce of CLUSTER foundation, an organisation which is dedicated to the conservation and protection of the Mar Menor.  The meeting was attended by about a hundred people who learnt about the origin and formation of the Mar Menor along with its spectacular flora, fauna and marine life.  Maria Jose explained about the threat of contamination from the use of chemicals in agriculture what she called "irresponsible tourism".  Tourism is good, and people should come and visit the area, but some kinds of activities do not respect the unique environment that exists here.

As a result of the meeting 26 people signed up to form part of a project which will be carried out over the next few weeks to help clear one of the waterways in the area of Los Urrutias called La Marina de Carmoli.  The project will take place every Friday and Saturday from 13 June to 5 July.  If anyone else would like to get involved, you can do so sending an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  More information can also be found on the website: www.fundacioncluster.es.

From this initial contact ADAPT will also be establishing an environmental group which will work closely with the CLUSTER foundation and communicate back to the English speaking community.  The ADAPT committee is delighted that so many of our members and friends have seen this as an opportunity to participate in helping the local area, as well as to learn new things and to meet new people.  The language barrier will be a challenge, but one which can be overcome with goodwill and enthusiasm.

The next meeting of ADAPT will be on Saturday 5 July at 11.00 am in The Casino, San Pedro del Pinatar.
