ADAPT is part of a wider network. Exciting things happening in San Pedro del Pinatar.......................... Over the last few months the town hall of San Pedro del Pinatar has been making many moves to try and get its local citizens to become more active and to participate more in the running and well-being of the town. The formation of ADAPT can be seen in this context, because although we are completely independent and free to run our affairs exactly as we wish, at the same time this new local council has been very supportive and open to the ideas we have brought to them.Earlier this year the president and vice-president of ADAPT, Jane and Val, attended a two-day conference at the Thalasia Hotel on the subject of "citizen's participation". The conference was attended by hundreds of ordinary San Pedro residents, along with interested people from other areas, who gathered to listen to speakers from all over Spain explaining their experiences of "citizen's participation" in their areas. The variety of ideas and anecdotes that came from the conference was fascinating and very motivating for the people involved. Since then, there have been a number of other workshops and courses going on in the town. As you walk around you may notice some of the posters. One of them says "Unete" (join up!) and is looking for individuals to join in with a volunteers scheme aimed at helping the weaker members of the community. There have also been training sessions for people such as ourselves with associations, and on Monday 26 May there is an open forum to discuss how to create more equality between men and women in San Pedro del Pinatar. Not all that is happening is directly relevant to the English speaking community, and of ourse there is the ever present problem of language. However, all of us in ADAPT should be aware that we are part of a wider movement and seek to find ways to contribute to the work at hand in the town. |
