Vice President (English-speaking) position
Reme explained that at the last AGM several committee posts had not been
filled as no one came forward for election. However, someone has now come
forward to fill the second Vice President post, Mike Pudney, who has been an ADAPT member for many years and is well known to the theatre group.

Mike’s appointment to the committee was proposed by Eric Berg and seconded by Bob Hill and was endorsed by a show of hands from members.
Reme then introduced Diana Wiltshire, AECC volunteer.
Diana explained that she volunteered for AECC, a major Spanish cancer charity, and whilst many people know of the work of the Pink Ladies in Torrevieja this is just a different branch of AECC working out of Campoverde.
Diana started by checking out with members how many had had key tests recently, mammograms and smear tests for women and prostate for men. These are difficult to obtain once you reach 65 on the health service unless for a specific reason.
At Campoverde all paperwork can be sorted for appointments for tests which are carried out at the IMED Hospital in Torrevieja, just off the N322, near to the cinema and Specsavers. A phone call or visit to the hospital will then set up the appointment, usually in about a week, the staff speak excellent English.

The office in Campoverde is open on the first and third Wednesday of each month, except August, and is based by the main entrance to Campoverde, in the Per Europa building.
(For those unsure as to where to find the office, go straight through Pilar High St, from the N332, and keep going on the same road, past the golf course.
Straight over the next little roundabout (bottom end of Campoverde) and slightly uphill to the next big roundabout. Turn right here, and immediately on the right there is a small car park, outside our office. Do not go further into Campoverde, we are right on the edge.)
Gentlemen should have a prostate test annually which these days involves a PSA blood test AND an ultra-scan. Unlike in the past there is no discomfort at all.
Most ladies know they should have a mammogram every two years. What is well less known is that women who have had a hysterectomy, but retain their ovaries need to check for ovarian cancer, which is a silent killer. The main check for this is an ultra-scan.
Costs of tests are;
Smear test – € 35
Mammogram – € 35
Prostate blood test – € 5
Prostate ultra-scan – € 20
Dermatology for any worrying moles, skin tags etc. – € 35
It doesn’t matter where you live, you don’t need to be a Spanish resident, this service is available to all.
Please bring your NIE or passport number.
Reme thanked Diana for her illuminating and important talk.
Cava and cake (lemon and elderflower) was then served by committee to members in celebration of ADAPTS ten-year history and the recent Royal wedding in the UK.

Quiz – Jane Cronin then acted as quiz master for 20 questions on interesting facts Spain, with the winning team having 18 correct answers.

The raffle then completed the meeting’s proceedings. Celia now says € 674.50 has been raised by the raffle in 2018 for our two charities this year, MABS and AIDEMAR.

Reme concluded by wishing members a good summer and looked forward to
seeing everyone at the next meeting on 8th  September.
